What are the stupidest but awesome names you have come across?
Today I met Mermaid.
In Hong Kong, many years ago, in a branch of McDonalds were two twin sisters, one called Kinetic and the other Energy. They were a kind of cult-like attraction to gweilos.

In my office presently:-Apple-Candy-Apple (again)
My former students:-Candy-Snow-Lucky-Easy (I wish I was joking)-Apple-Moniac (that's not a typo. she told me to pronounced it the way it was spelled)-Ripen (I don't even...)-Cherry-Cheery-Xena
That's all I got right now... I'm gonna go over my class lists... There were some doozies...The guys had equally ridiculous names though. (Wade, Lionel Messi, God, Amigo, Sexy, Kobe, Cena, Klein, Prada (yes... a guy chose this name))
我之前的学生有-Candy糖果-Snow雪-Lucky幸运-Easy (I wish I was joking)简单（骚逼）我可没开玩笑哦-Apple苹果-Moniac 机尾警戒雷达(这可没打错哦。

By that logic, Moxie Crimefighter is a normal name now. (It's not)

No it didn't. It's very much still on the WTF list.

I am guessing Moniac was supposed to be Monica, but she screwed it up somewhere along the way.
[–]mrmdcCanada 8 分/分 1 月 ago
I would assume so... But she was adamant that I pronounce it Moniac.
Like maniac, but with an 'o'

why the fuck are Kobe from Kobe Bryant and Wade from I-don't-his-fucking full-name-NBA-star ridiculous?
[–]mrmdcCanada 6 分/分 1 月 ago
I only find it ridiculous because it's specifically chosen for the basketball stars. I find it dumb anywhere in the world when parents name their kids after sports or movie stars.
It's one thing if you like the name... But when it's just because of the celebrity, it's lame.

Back in my teaching days, I had a Foggy (we encouraged her to choose something else), Albee (she was mad annoying), an Ice who later changed her name to Shadow (both cool, not stupid), and an Isobal (pronounced "Isabel"). I'm sure there were tons more, but that was 4-5 years ago.
My friend's ex-wife is Apple. Another friend knows a girl named Gorgon.
[–]rawbdor 25 分/分 1 月 ago
Albee (she was mad annoying)
I bet she was racist, and born in a dragon year. Fucking racist dragons always getting named Alby.

15 years ago when I was a 4th grader, my English teacher gave the whole class a list of common English names to let everyone chose from. They are pretty normal names like Ann, Lily, Peter etc. and I went with Helen for two years but never liked that name. Then most of us felt it's really mediocre and wanted to change it to something "unique". Some student chose something that can resemble or sound like their Chinese names. One kid chose Mosquito only because his Chinese name is 文 which sounds the same as 蚊(mosquito). In Chinese, almost any character can be taken as a first name. Of course there are popular ones, but sometimes people think it's cooller to have really strange words in one's name. However, in English, last names are more variable than first names. I met at least 5 Sarah already and I don't ever want to name my kids a "common" English name. P.S. One reason Lily is popular is because it's a character in official English textbook for elementary students.

English names are pretty set, there's only a collection of a thousand or so of them. A lot of them are from the Bible or have meanings in other languages - lots of English names are spread out in different forms all over Europe, and they have a meaning in one of those languages!
Names like 'Mosquito' I think are pretty cool. But they're nicknames, not names.
Lily's actually an old name, it's coming back into fashion after a good period out of fashion (English names come in and out of fashion).
If you're going to live in China, you can call your kid whatever you want because nobody's going to care. But if you're going to live in the West it's better to call your kid something normal. Children get teased and bullied because of their names in English-speaking countries.
[–]ZhouEnlaiCheatnSteal 2 分/分 1 月 ago
In many parts of Europe, they only use about 365 names (plus variations). They actually assign each day of the calendar to a name and celebrate their "name day" almost like a second birthday every year.

[–]HerroRogan 2 分/分 1 月 ago
Hmm, are you from the UK or New Zealand?
Anyway, after being told by my American friend that the correct pronunciation was "POO-mah," he said he didn't care and that he liked how "PYU-mah" sounded better. Wasn't based on the UK's pronunciation.

Mermaid is classic. She sounds "smrt". i met a sales chick on Alibaba named Funky Wang. i actually chose her company as one we would meet in person bc of her name and she turned out to be quite nice, albeit 25 with the maturity level of a 15 yr old. I also know a Vanilla, February, and a Strawberry. Cherry, Karen, Angel and Candy seem to be most popular english names now. In HK it bugged meet to meet so many girls named Winnie. Don't know why that was so popular down there. My old travel agent in HK was named Venus Poon, still love that name. Best guys name here that i've met was Danger.

It's the British influence. Winnie used to be a very popular name, it's still in the top 1000 most popular girls name in the US

Yes, but he's the one with the weird name. Winnie the Pooh was named after a female black bear named Winnie who was in turn named after the fine city of Winnipeg:
But the name Winnie predates the Pooh. According to wikipedia, the name is Welsh and goes quite a ways back and used to be more common:

looked up Winnie, now it makes sense why chinese gals like it so much - "white and smooth; soft; happiness; or fair and pure"
Winnie or Winny (\wi(n)-ny) is a female given name of Welsh origin, a variant of Edwina, Winifred or Winnifred, Gwendolyn, Guinevere (Welsh), Gwyneth (Welsh), and Wynne (Welsh). The name's meaning is fair one; white and smooth; soft; happiness; or fair and pure. The popularity of the name Winnie steadily declined among American women in the 20th century, but in the 1990 US Census, still ranked 699th of 4276.
