BEIJING (AP) — Chinese authorities vowed to severely punish Chinese travelers who threw hot water and noodles on a Thai flight attendant and threatened to bomb the plane after they became enraged over sitting arrangements.
China National Tourism Administration said Saturday the tourists disrupted the flight, hurt other passengers and "badly damaged the overall image of the Chinese people." It comes at a time when the Chinese are traveling more but also becoming notorious for rough behavior.
A Chinese passenger berated a crew member of the budget airline Thai AirAsia before pouring hot water and throwing noodles at her during a charter flight to Nanjing last Thursday. The flight returned to Bangkok and the pilot asked the passenger and her entourage of three others to disembark. They were reportedly upset after being told they couldn't sit together and even after a flight attendant helped them change the seats.
In footage aired by China's state television CCTV, a male passenger loudly threatened to bomb the plane. He later said the attendant was scalded by accident during a tussle over a receipt they had requested for the hot water.
After the plane turned back, the captain and the crew invited the passenger to discuss the situation and reached "an amicable conclusion," Thai AirAsia said.
The Chinese tourism administration did not say what punishment the tourists could face, but the statement suggested that the travel agency that organized the trip could be punished for failing to offer proper behavior guidance and that the tourists should be blacklisted for bad credit.
Many in China reacted saying they were embarrassed by such behavior. Even Chinese President Xi Jinping, during a recent visit to the Maldives, urged the Chinese tourists to be more civilized by not throwing away plastic bottles or destroying coral reefs.
More than 100 million Chinese have traveled overseas this year, more than any other country.
I travel a lot. It's no secret that the Chinese are the worst ever. They are loud, rude, they cut in line, they crowd others away from sales counters. They have no manners at all, unlike the Japanese, Koreans and Philippinos I run across. And now that they think they are top dogs they are even worse. I guess when a Chinese group leaves and they haven't carved their names in a monument or pooped in the alley next to your business you have come out pretty good. Money does not buy class, it just makes street rabble worse.
In August of 2014, I was visiting South Korea. The hotel I stayed in Daegu is fairly upscale. A couple of nights, a large group of Chinese tourists (from mainland China) stayed at the same hotel. They were dressed decently. But most of them behaved very, very badly, ill-mannered, and extremely boisterous. Before you are exiting the elevator, they will storm right into the elevator!!! Even after midnight, they were making so much noise in the hall and shutting the doors loud. I had to call the hotel security twice. Then, in Seoul, I ran into another group of Chines tourists at a hotel. They, too, behaved very badly in many aspects. I know China is rapidly growing to be a powerhouse. But, most of its citizens are still act and behave in a very uncivilized manner. Trust me, I am not making this up. Why would I? I personally observed it and experienced it just a few months ago......
While it is abhorring behavior, as a foreigner who been living and working in China for the last 10+ years, let me say that these "bad" Chinese are the more affluent less educated group. They embarrassed many mainland Chinese too. Even in China, when I encounter rude behavior, I normally tell them off nicely
It is most unfortunate that the Chinese government do not start promoting courteous behavior from within the government departments and SOEs first. This should be the 1st place to change attitudes & behavior.
If China government want to rebuild image, those tourists must be punished severely. It will give good lessons to others. In addition to the punishments, all future tourists must be well-trained before letting them go abroad. The way most of them act now is very shameful especially for a country that is considered as one of the super powers in the world. How can China leads the world if most of its people are so ignorant to foreign custom? Right now, everywhere I go, when I see group(s) of mainland Chinese together I know troubles right away ... I'm too tired to put up with them, and just try to stay away instead.
On a recent visit to a Zoo,a funny thing happened. People were watching Monkeys playing in an enclosure, all of sudden the monkeys stopped playing and started throwing Feces at a visitor who happened to be Chinese, shortly after that the Chinese visitor started throwing Feces back at the monkeys, this went on for 15 minutes and right after that the monkeys and the Chinese visitor started laughing at each other.it was almost like the monkeys were saying " Cousin where have you been?long time No see".
I was from mainland China. I hate to say that I am ashamed of the behavior of the mainland Chinese people. I went on a cruise from Hong Kong to Taiwan a few years back. There were a lot of mainland Chinese on board. They were rude, loud. They cut in front of the buffet line (or any line for that matter). I hope the China National Tourism Administration take this incident seriously and educate their people. It's the only way to improve their image.
They always cut. I been there many times. They try to cut as if you won't care. It is extremely rude. I got cut at airports, atm machines, and such. Its insane.
Im chinese and im sad to hear all the hatred against the whole population of china, my girlfriend and I, meets those people on a daily basis, and we too are disgusted by their behavior, we call them Low level farmers, but we and all my friends isn't like that, Mainland China could be better, we might even have democracy if it wasn't for all theese monkeys living among us, they spit everywhere (trainstations, netcafes, restaurants) they throw gabage everywhere even when theres a trashcan 10meters away, they skip lines, they're yelling even when the person they are talking to stands 1meter away etc. Theres a huge amount of people in China who cant stand them too, but civilized people doesn't go around and tell other people what to do and how to do, so think of it this way, u've been born in a family full of thieves and liars, now u went to college but people still sees u as ur family, its a curse that cant go away because people has to comment on everything they see and asume every individual is the same as the worst in a group..
Every country has problems, Ive been to so many places, and theres bad eggs everywhere, think of ur own country is the older generation civilized? if yes then I bet all my underwears that the newer generation is full of spoiled brats that thinks that rules are here to be broken and can do whatever they want.
Bird Dog L19
Not all Chinese are bad, I had met many decent people , but as I saw on the you tube, some of the Chinese pure their angers onto a Japanese Dog , tied to the tree, then beat the Dog to dead as they want to show the world how much hatred toward the Japanese .Or the owner of the Chinese restaurant in Perking put up a sign : not welcome to Japanese , Vietnamese or Philippines .These people cause a huge damages to the Chinese Images. The China government need to educate their citizen how to re- act better as your President want China to be leader of the World.
The Chinese authorities should start clamping down hard on those citizens that tarnish the country's reputation. Here are my suggestions:-
1) Arrest them & fine them heavily.
2) At the same time jail them for a short period of time & make them to sweep the public roads with a sign which says they are being punished for shaming the country".
3) Confiscate their passports and ban them from travelling oversea for at least 10 years.
4) If they are caught committing similiar offences, ban them for life & triple at least the punishments.
The chinese tourists are a menace to the tourist industry. They are the most undisciplined, rude, very loud and uncivilized people. I just returned from a 15 days tour in Europe and they are horrible people and no table manners!.They do not know how to wait in line, they spit everywhere, they leave their garbage everywhere and the most irritating is when they gather around the buffet lines as if it is the end of the world. They are pest!
Al Sharpton Is A Pudwacker
I am confused to be honest. The guy stood up and threatened he had a bomb? If I were a passenger I would have attacked him and you would be justified. And held him down until the police arrived. How were these people not arrested? Aren't there international laws against threatening to bomb an airplane? How were they not thrown in a Thai jail? This makes no sense.
Chinese tourists are despicable. Xi Jinping is right. That's sad when your President has to comment on your behavior. Destroying corral reefs? Who does that? Let me guess, they try to bring the corral back to China. Getting a receipt for hot water? Chinese are also known to steal everything they can from the planes, blankets, magazines, you name it.
I recommend anyone out there to keep a close eye on these people. They are 2 year olds trapped in adult bodies.
I read here more than once about how well mannered the Japanese are , but let's not forget what they did to the Chinese at the Nanking Massacre. Read that and maybe you will have a little more compassion. Altho there's no excuse for the new breed of chinese . The self entitled screw everyone else chinese. I'm not speaking about the children who are really quite sweet and well behaved . Or the elderly who are passive and laid back. Just the slimy rat bastrds like this idiot ,his stupid scummy girlfriend , who by the way should commit suicide and do the world a favor, and the rest of the tour group low class type garbage.
Not to brand all Chinese as being rude or disrespectful, but a small group of Chinese who believe they are "Entitled" because of their new financial status. Unfortunately they bring dishonor to the Chinese people. Glad the government has chosen to make an example of people who behave such as this.
The travel agency could be punished for not telling them that throwing scalding hot water and yelling bomb threats is not considered proper behavior? Is that not a no brainer? Reeeally? Although living here in Hong Kong we see mainlanders poop right in the streets from time to time so I really shouldn't be surprised...
"the travel agency that organized the trip could be punished for failing to offer proper behavior guidance"
Really? "Don't throw boiling water at people and don't threaten to bomb the airplane just because you can't switch seats" had to be in the instructions?
How the heck is the TRAVEL COMPANY taking blame for this?
